Shen’s dream of freedom for China was so powerful, he said, that he could never have been prepared for the nightmare that happened in Tian An Men Square. In early 1989, he established the Olympic Institute, an independent student organization that promoted discussion of new ideas about science, philosophy and, eventually, politics.
